Architect Juan Trias de Bes founded the professional studio TDB Arquitectura in Barcelona in 1992. He is the architect behind institutional works such as the University Residence in Sarrià (Barcelona), the headquarters of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, the central office of Grífols Laboratories, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in collaboration with Carlos Ferrater on Paseo de Gracia (Barcelona), the Sant Cugat campus of ESADE University, and the new Center for Translational Surgery Research, among others.
In 2009, Juan Trias de Bes was recognized for his competence in research methodology when he presented his doctoral thesis proposal, “Architectural Materiality,” to the Department of Composition and Architectural Theory at ETSAB. The focus was on the relationship between material and form, with Swiss architect Peter Zumthor as a reference. In 2013, under the supervision of Professor José María Montaner, he received a summa cum laude rating for his doctoral thesis.
